It was in a spirit of cooperation and hope that 24 students from Greece, Germany and France gathered in Thessaloniki for the third and final part of this seminar.
The PhD, MA and BA students from different backgrounds and positions came together to listen, debate and create, as part of a meaningful and successful pilot project that allowed youth to take charge of their future and come up with solutions to the current global economic crisis. Through this unique and successful exchange, the leaders of tomorrow provided a reflection on and an analysis of concrete solutions for the crisis through the looking glass of diversity and open-mindedness.
The week in Thessaloniki was the culmination of a three-city project, Euro(pe) Crisis without End?, which included workshops in Berlin in December and Paris in March. The project was spearheaded by the French-German Youth Office (OFAJ/DFJW), the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe, Humboldt University of Berlin and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Grenoble (Sciences Po). The German and French Foreign Offices provided financial support
The conference was divided into three main topics: populism and the rise of extremism as a threat born of the crisis, the social price of the current economic situation, and how the young generation will overcome the obstacles in a creative and productive way. The Mayor of Thessaloniki, the German and French Consuls, prominent professors and journalists contributed by adding content to the students’ analysis and their path to reaching the final results. Thessaloniki functioned as a beneficial contributor to the future plans of the students. The students created a new movement, Demos Europa www.facebook.com/demos.europa aimed at strengthening the voice of young people of Europe so that it can be clearly heard. The creation of the website http://www.europewithoutcrisis.eu/en/ about a Europe without Crisis, proves that young people are ready to build a stable constructive foundation with ambitions, better perspectives and inspirations.
